About Us

The Royal Adelaide Hospital is the largest hospital in South Australia, providing world class health care and facilities, it is the most advanced hospital in Australia.

Burns Unit

The Adult Burn Service at the Royal Adelaide Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for burn injuries in patients over 16 years old for the entire state of South Australia, as well as the Northern Territory, western NSW and western Victoria; representing a catchment area of 2.4 million square kilometres.

The Adult Burns Service is renowned for its innovation in burn care and treats approximately 450 inpatients and sees around 3,000 outpatient visits every year.

We are the only burns centre outside of North America and Canada to hold verification from the American Burn Association (ABA).

We have proudly held verification since 2009. The Adult Burns Service has a closed, dedicated 15 bed inpatient ward with integrated step-down ICU facilities.

Our facilities also incorporate a dedicated outpatient facility with medical, nursing, and allied health facilities; our outpatient service has a strong virtual component with remote and rural communities throughout central Australia in conjunction without our 'link specialists' that have been trained by our Service.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit

The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital sees over 3500 inpatient admissions and more than 8500 outpatient encounters each year in our state-of-the-art quaternary health facility.

We provide our services to patients of South Australia, as well as patients from the Northern Territory and far west regions of New South Wales and Victoria.

The Unit has 12 Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, 2 Senior Medical Practitioners, 5 Registrars, 3 Fellows and 4 Junior Medical Officers.

The Unit has a dedicated 16-bed inpatient ward and a dedicated operating theatre with specialised equipment and nursing staff. Our outpatient clinic is also staffed by specialist nurses and is co-located with specialist allied health staff.

The Unit works in close collaboration with other specialties including Orthopaedics, Colorectal, Gynae-Oncology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Cleft & Craniofacial, Oral-Maxillofacial, Breast-Endocrine and General Surgery among many others.
