An exciting opportunity exists to join the ICU Department at Wollongong Hospital.


Where you'll be working

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra and Shoalhaven's major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed base of more than 500.

The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

    What you'll be doing
  • The Intensive Care Trainee will work under the supervision of Specialist Intensive Care Physicians, assisting to manage, diagnose and treat patients with severe medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric illness. This may include the management of deteriorating and seriously ill patients outside the intensive care unit as well as the intrahospital transport of critically ill patients.
  • This position may suit a trainee with relatively little experience (PGY3) to more experienced trainees (prefellowship). The experienced trainees may already have post graduate qualifications in critical care, Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine. More experienced Trainees might be competent with invasive lines, intubation, ventilator support and managing critically ill patients with multiorgan failure.
  • The Trainee will participate in a rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends and may rotate to Anaesthetics and / or Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital (which meets the CICM training requirement for rural Intensive Care). Selection Criteria:


  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • At least two years postgraduate experience
  • Ability to practice as a safe and competent Intensive Care Trainee
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • If primary medical degree from overseas, demonstrated eligibility for registration with either a pass in the AMC Part 1 Exam or completed training and assessment in an approved Competent Authority
