Formed in October 2021, Aged Care Research & Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA) was established as an independent, not-for-profit organisation, as part of the Australian Government's aged care workforce strategy, A Matter of Care, to respond to the needs facing the dynamic national aged care industry.


Supported by Flinders University in South Australia, ARIIA has been set up to lead the advancement of the aged care workforce capability by promoting and facilitating innovation and embedding research evidence to improve the quality of aged care for all Australians.

As the collaborative hub for the national aged care ecosystem, ARIIA operates as a partner and collaborative source of expertise, knowledge, and transformative opportunities for the aged care workforce, providers, researchers, suppliers, consumers, and innovators.


Currently being governed by an interim board of directors, now is the time to appoint the National inaugural board for ARIIA to set the strategic direction to ensure the organisation meets its goals, purpose and obligations; establish a governance framework; oversee the financial performance of the organisation; ensure risk is managed strategically and effectively; play an active role in building a culture of integrity by modelling the agreed organisational behaviours.

To form a skills-based board, we are seeking 5 Board Directors to fill the roles of at least one of the following:

  • at least 1 Director with direct experience in care delivery
  • Demonstrated through at least 5 years of practical experience within the 10 years prior to appointment, which could include experience as a personal care worker, allied health practitioner, or other role with direct care responsibilities for aged care consumers and as evidenced by professional employment experience.
- at least 1 Director with lived experience of aged care

  • Demonstrated through experience as a direct recipient of aged care services or as the carer/supporter of someone receiving aged care services as evidenced by background and experience.
- at least 1 Director with experience in research translation

  • Demonstrated through experience and expertise in research and research translation, ideally in aged care or closely related sectors as evidenced by relevant professional experience/ qualifications.
- at least 1 Director independent of the aged care sector and with commercial acumen

  • With demonstrated experience independent of the aged care sector and with commercial and/or legal and/or financial acumen and/or innovation / transformation.
In addition to the above listed skills, expertise and experience, it is expected that successful board members will also have evidence of at least one of the following:

  • Strategic Thinking
  • Integrity
  • Strong written and verbal Communication
  • Stakeholder Engagement Experience and Capability
  • Organisational Leadership
  • Cultural Sensitivity
Previous board experience and/or AICD qualifications is expected for all five Directors.


Board Directors must ensure they can devote sufficient time and commitment to perform their role and duties as a Board Director and must ensure they can attend the monthly scheduled (virtual) board (and potential future committee) meetings.
