The Opportunity


As a Research Associate, you will be working on a project within the ARC Research Hub for Australian Steel Innovation (Steel Research Hub).

Led by the University of Wollongong, the Steel Research Hub brings together 9 Universities (University of NSW, Australian National University, RMIT University, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, Swinburne University of Technology, Deakin University and Monash University) and 10 industry partners (BlueScope, Infrabuild Wire, Infrabuild Manufacturing, Liberty Primary Steel, ArcelorMittal, Australian Steel Institute, Weld Australia, Australian Industry Group and NASH) to deliver innovative research designed to enable a necessary technological shift in the steel supply chain.


Working within Program 4 (Steel Supply Chain Transformation) of the Steel Research Hub, you will be involved in and lead research activities in a project which aims to implement interactive and explainable machine learning algorithms to assist in steel production.

Working closely with Professor Claude Sammut and our collaborators, the University of Wollongong and industry partner BlueScope Steel, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing software for capturing expertise in steel manufacturing, reporting project status and outcomes, liaison with the industry partner, and preparation of research papers.


This is a highly collaborative project where you will work closely with personnel at BlueScope's Port Kembla Steelworks to undertake applied, industry-focussed research.

You may be required to spend a fraction of your work time embedded within the partner team at Port Kembla.

This role reports to Professor Claude Sammut.

  • Salary, Level A $100,318 to $107,299 per annum + 17% superannuation

Skills & Experience

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in computer science, materials, manufacturing, engineering or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent work with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated involvement in industry projects in related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Proficiency in machine learning and knowledge acquisition techniques, including symbolic methods for building explainable models.
  • Experience with programming in C/C++, Python, and database system. Desirable experience with Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with good software engineering practices.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
