The role:


A great opportunity for a Systems Engineering Manager (Head of Discipline) to join our Above Water Systems Business based in Garden Island.

This position provides resource leadership to manage a core team of Systems Engineers and Technicians for the AWS System Engineering programmes and the broader Thales community as required working alongside HoD's across other Engineering Functions.


The Systems Engineering discipline specialises in combat system & overall system design and integration expertise and performs the activities associated with undertaking the Systems Engineering process to achieve program objectives.

Activities include the development of requirements, architecture, design process, development, integration, and verification of systems to achieve defined customer requirements.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing professional Leadership and Systems engineering services
  • Lead, direct, mentor and develop your direct and indirect reports (where applicable) as part of the wider engineering community. This includes assigning and monitoring work based on defined business requirements and priorities.
  • Conducting and supporting the professional development pathway program for all reports (both direct and indirect).
  • Provide Systems Engineering discipline leadership within AWS by providing leadership and advice to major bids (AUSDEFCON) and projects, writing or reviewing SEMPs and related engineering plans, reviewing and auditing projects and bid activities.
  • Perform Workforce Planning/Management for your Discipline. This includes forecasting Work in Progress & Future workload in conjunction with other Functional Managers, identifying resource allocation and competency management.
  • Use and promote the use of the Thales Chorus reference system and the Engineering Management Systems as the enabling technologies to provide integrated and controlled systems engineering effort.
  • Maintain a Level 2 or equivalent Engineering Authority in the field of Systems Engineering.
  • Promote AWS products and capabilities throughout Thales and the wider communities.

How about you:


  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering &/or Masters qualification in related discipline. Chartered Professional Engineer (EA), &/or registered with INCOSE.
  • Significant practical experience (15+ years) and a thorough knowledge of Systems Engineering standards, processes, practices, and tools.
  • Preferred experience in Naval Combat Systems, Sensor Systems, Missile/Gun Fire Control Systems and Combat Management Systems.
  • A high level of leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (written/verbal), as well as the ability to lead a multidisciplinary team across cultural boundaries. This includes managing stakeholder (internal/external) expectations.
  • Significant experience of problem analysis, investigation and resolution in complex real time systems
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with a great sense of initiative.
  • A background in Model Based Engineering tools (e.g. DOORS, JIRA, Clear Quest, Enterprise Architect) and other engineering tools
