Eligibility

Division Responsibilities
The Legal and Assurance Division includes the Department of Health and Aged Care's

internal legal practice and delivers legal and assurance services across the Department's

activities. Lawyers in the Department work in a dynamic and intellectually challenging

environment providing legal services in areas of law such as biosecurity, health law, aged

care and litigation.

The Legal and Assurance Division comprises the following Branches:


  • Legal Advice and Legislation Branch.
  • Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch; and
  • Corporate Assurance Branch.

Branch Responsibilities
The Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch provides strategic legal advice to the

Secretary, the Executive and the line areas of the Department, on matters of litigation,

dispute resolution, support for response to COVID-19 including the vaccine rollout,

commercial law, privacy, data sharing, employment law and corporate governance

(including statutory appointments).

The Branch is responsible for managing the legal commercial, corporate and a cohort of

litigation work of the Department. The Branch provides quality, cost effective services for

the Department, to mitigate legal risk and represents the Department within the broader

Commonwealth legal framework.


Section Responsibilities
The Legal Policy and Practice Management Section is responsible for management of the

daily practice operations - including reporting, for the Division. The team provides support

to the Division and the Chief Counsel by undertaking the following:

  • Developing business plans and risk management strategies;**
  • Analysing business practices to find and realise efficiencies in the delivery of legal
services and manage the contract with the legal services providers ensuring the

delivery of cost effective services;

  • Coordinating and preparing responses to whole of government legal issues;
  • Coordinating and producing legal services reports for the executive as required;
  • Working closely with the Office of Legal Services Coordination (OLSC) within the
Attorney-General's Department;

  • Managing the recruitment and accommodation requirements for the Division;
  • Managing the financial and procurement processes for the Division; and**
  • Ensuring compliance with Legal Services Directions and the Public Governance,
Performance and Accountability Act 2013.***
Key Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, Administrative Assistants will primarily undertake a data capture
and data entry project to locate, retrieve and migrate historical data holdings from

one electronic platform to another.

  • In addition to data entry work, Administrative Assistants will be required to review
previous legal files to identify key documents for inclusion in an advice reference

library.

  • Administrative Assistants will also provide administrative support as required.***
