How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne


The role of the Children and Youth Services Librarian is to provide high quality library service and programming for children, youth and their families and the community.


The position is required to:

  • Provide excellent customer service to all library users.
  • Identify, develop and deliver literacy programs and services for children and young people.
  • Develop and deliver outreach programs and services to support access to relevant library services.
  • Support the planning and delivery of children's and young people library collections.

What you will bring

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
  • Eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and/ or other relevant qualification.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of customer service excellence.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities within a high volume environment, deliver on individual work timetable and work effectively and collaboratively in crossfunctional teams.
  • Demonstrated understanding of community development principles, with experience in the provision of children and young people's literacy related programs and services
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and efficiently manage high volume level of public interactions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to use library online resources, computer equipment, mobile devices, and emerging technologies, with the ability to problem solve information technology issues
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with high level literacy, numeracy, information retrieval and technology skills in addition to strong presentation skills with an emphasis on public engagement.
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations, resolve problems and diffuse potential conflict.
