What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Librarian.


The AFP Library & Knowledge Services team delivers a wide range of open source information products and services in support of enabling our police to deliver maximum impact to the criminal environment.

The team works collaboratively with various external partners to deliver library services in a busy and dynamic environment.

The role is in the AFP Library & Knowledge Services team, AFP College, Barton, Canberra.

It primarily requires a person who has highly developed organisational skills especially in the area of quality client focussed open source research, delivered within critical timeframes due to the operational nature of the AFP.

The responsibilities of the role are vital in creating access to information that is required for law enforcement operations.


You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments.

It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Demonstrable experience in a special/corporate/government library setting is desirable, with the ability to be flexible across a range of duties such as:
Deliver quality research services with a capability to prioritise information requests and other duties, based on operational requirements;
Develop and deliver training on databases the library manages;
Produce current awareness products;
Provide and maintain a respected client focussed service to a wide variety of rank and roles with the AFP;
Develop, promote and present library outreach programs;
Collaborate with colleagues on collection development activities such as acquisitions, base level cataloguing and abstracting.


The role requires a person capable of demonstrating flexibility and adaptability across all library services, within a small and established team environment.

Essential Requirements
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.

Formal qualifications in library and/or information science, undergraduate or postgraduate level, with eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association; or extensive demonstrated equivalent skills and experience.

Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
Professionalism demonstrated through adaptability, respect, and a results orientated outlook.
Knowledge of advanced search strategies for research databases, bibliographic databases and integrated library management systems.

Please note:
This position has been advertised in multiple locations however, the role is located in Canberra. Successful applicants from interstate must be willing to relocate to Canberra.
