The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The Team


The reporting team consists of 4-6 members (dependent on the election cycle) and workforce management systems, data, and analysis to support evidence-based decision making, within a medium sized agency comprising of staff engaged under the Public Service Act 1999 (Cth) and through statutory appointments governed by the Remuneration Tribunal.


The Opportunity


The Assistant Director, Workforce Reporting and Analytics will establish and maintain workforce management systems, data, and analysis to support evidence-based decision making.

You will manage the evaluation of workforce data and reporting to analyse trends, identify capability gaps and leverage insights to inform workforce planning.


There is a strong focus on process adherence, continuous improvement, high level stakeholder engagement and ongoing refinement of current tools and systems to deliver the agencies goals and objectives.

You will work closely with key areas to monitor and improve data quality gathered and utilised by the AEC.


This role will work very closely with operational support teams to embed best practice, implement improvement with a strong customer focus to deliver significant organisational impact through consistent and efficient process delivery.

To excel you will have experience in the following:

  • Effectively support HR Services in delivery of workforce reporting and data management, ensuring that systems, methodologies, policies, processes, and procedures are developed and follow a best practice model.
  • Strong understand of Workforce planning and management in an APS context to support the strategic outcomes of the AEC.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships. Provide analysis and judgement on complex reporting and dashboards.
  • Lead and manage a serviceoriented team to deliver high quality service delivery, including building team capability to maintain a high level of expertise and encouraging career development.
  • Report, update and communicate with all relevant stakeholders on ongoing operational reporting and dashboarding actions.
  • Provide high quality and timely advice both internally and externally, including guidance and reporting to Branch leadership and the Senior Executive cohort including, Executive Leadership Team.
  • Communicate and make decisions using professional judgement, evaluating risks and in the context of a complex and changing environment.
  • Contribute to doctrine, election preparation and delivery activities in accordance with the election readiness framework, according to individual accountabilities and responsibilities.
  • Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed by the Management from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Mandatory_
  • In depth knowledge and experience developing and implementing workforce reporting and dashboards.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in successfully managing and delivering results within time restraints and with competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to communicate with influence, negotiate outcomes and manage complex stakeholder relationships, including across a geographically dispersed network.
  • Proven conceptual and analytical abilities with sound knowledge of change management practices and techniques to enable innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff while developing capabilities, encouraging career development, and embedding professionalism.
  • Desirable_
  • Tertiary qualification in Human Resources or similar field and/or at least 3 years knowledge and experience working in a human resources systems/reporting environment.
  • Knowledge and experience working in HR within a public service environment.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to, quickly gain knowledge of Australian electoral law and practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Commonwealth frameworks, including Resource Management and people management.
  • Experience with Aurion, TechOne, Power BI and One Model of benefit.
