ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:


The City Strategy team sits within Council's Environment and Planning Directorate and focuses on community engagement, smart places, place activation, planning legislation and policy development spanning across the Cumberland LGA, along with supporting Council's strategic objectives by enhancing the life and vitality of the communities who call Cumberland home.


The Place and Engagement team is a robust and zestful unit who are proud members of Place Leaders Asia Pacific, IAP2 Australasia and the Australian Smart Communities Association.

The team aims to collaborate and listen to the community to embed its voice and values to shape how we live, work and play through the enhancement of public spaces, community engagement and the development of Cumberland's economy.


We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Smart Places Officer to implement items from Council's Community Strategic Plan and Smart Places Strategy and Action Plan and work on multiple projects to support both operational and strategic planning deliverables.

The role will project manage precinct wide smart cities/places projects and provide support and advice regarding the design of place to ensure accessibility and safety using smart technology and infrastructure.


Reporting to the Senior Coordinator Place and Engagement, this role will work across all Council service areas and directly within the community to facilitate resolutions and improve outcomes from day to day infrastructure, smart technology and public domain upgrades and maintenance issues to developing improved community networks and local collaboration to address local concerns throughout the Cumberland area.


The successful applicant will require:

  • Relevant qualification in Business, IT, Urban Planning, Social Science, Project Management or a related discipline and/or relevant experience in Smart Cities, Place Making and Project Management.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role with transferable experience or skills
  • Demonstrated experience in Smart Cities/Places
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in stakeholder management, including the ability to facilitate meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement as well as the ability to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated and welldeveloped advocacy and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and strong time management and task prioritisation skills
  • Commercially minded, full of ideas that are passionate, creative, and demonstrate an ability to think innovatively
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate ability to prepare reports
  • Proven ability as well as welldeveloped research and analytical skills, and ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Class C drivers licence.

Position information:

This is a three (3) year term contract, full-time position working a 70 hour fortnight, with access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement.


This role is predominantly located at Council's Auburn office, with frequent travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council's work locations.


Salary information:
The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

  • Grade 12 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $92,660.88 to $106,559.96 per annum, plus 11% superannuation.
