The Role

The Workplace Health and Safety Officer is known within Navy as the Operational Risk Officer (ORO) and is responsible for the day to day management of inputs to the Navy Safety Management System for the particular Class of Ship.

In this case, the classes of ships are the Canberra Class LHD, Bay Class LSD, and the Supply Class AOR.


You will be responsible for monitoring and responding to all Safety Incident and Hazard reports from the ships that make up Amphibious and Afloat Support Group (AASGRP): for coordinating and providing the secretarial support to Safety Committees and Safety Boards, and for providing advice and support to ship's safety personnel and to the Capability Manager Representative of the AASGRP.


Other duties can include planning and managing the quarterly Amphibious Combat Sealift safety meeting, and the Afloat Support Class Safety meetings.

Generating the meeting minutes and distribution to stakeholders, conducting safety assessments and assisting with the development of remediation plans and corrective action, providing advice on specialist safety reports and audits and liaising with internal and external safety and support agencies.

Reviewing Safety Cases for the AASGRP Classes of ships.

You will identify how best to add value to the capability support team for the Amphibious and Afloat Support Group and what means exist to achieve cost efficiencies through best practice.
