The Role

Within the Project Control function an APS 5 Project Support Officer is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex project work within an integrated workforce.

They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.

An APS 5 Project Support Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility.

They will interpret and provide advice within the Project Control function based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews and perform procedural and administrative support work to achieve results.


The APS 5 Project Support Officer will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.

They are expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.


About our Team

The Project Support Officer positions are located in a number of teams including a Program Management Office and across multiple Projects.

Each team works with a range of stakeholders and users to develop and deliver intelligence capabilities and systems to the ADF, Defence Intelligence Community and National Intelligence Community.

Our teams work within a blended workforce consisting of ADF, APS and Contracted Team members and we focus on innovative solutions and user centric outcomes.


  • Provide operational support to project management and facilitate administrative and coordination requirements.
  • Accountable to lead the development and maintenance of project planning and processes in accordance with agreed procedures and performance standards.
  • Research, draft and prepare briefs, complex correspondence and reports including submissions for committee consideration.
  • Work collaboratively, operate as an effective team member and provide constructive feedback.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders and understand their expectations and concerns.
  • Assess and adjust project management methodologies to comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Resolve problems using expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.
