About the Opportunity

The Sexual Assault Service has an opportunity for a Female Aboriginal Health Worker who will provide therapeutic responses to children, adults, families and groups (all ages and genders).

This includes leading therapeutic practices in both individual and group settings.

You will be provided with professional development opportunities, cultural supervision, opportunities to participate in cultural strengths mapping and you will be part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce.


This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a service where you will a will have the chance to influence and shape culturally responsive therapeutic interventions to Aboriginal and Torres Start Islander clients.


What You'll be Doing

The Sexual Health Assault Service (SAS) Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) supports the provision of culturally responsive care to Aboriginal clients accessing Sexual Assault Counselling Services.

The position works collaboratively with SAS clinicians to ensure the cultural, therapeutic and psychosocial needs of Aboriginal clients are supported through a holistic approach to service provision.

The position will also play a key role in supporting the establishment of relationships with Aboriginal communities and organisations to improve access to sexual assault counselling services for Aboriginal people.

This will include developing and implementing a range of community based education, health promotion and prevention projects.

  • Demonstrated Aboriginality (an applicant's trace is genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discriminations Act 1977).
  • Being female is recognised as a genuine occupation qualification and is authorised under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 197
  • Demonstrated ability to create connections with Aboriginal community to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children, their families and communities with knowledge of intergenerational trauma, family violence, sexual abuse factors that have impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal communities.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and providing case management to children, young people and adults who have complex trauma experiences and/or complex health issues.
  • Demonstrated experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics and social context of sexual assault and child abuse and its effect on Aboriginal children, their families and communities.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing service networks that enable referral pathways and coordination of service provision.
  • High level written and verbal communication skills, including basic computer skills.
