Specialist Geometallurgist

Work Location:
Iron Bridge - Fortescue's Iron Bridge project is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

Roster:8D/6R - FIFO ex Perth

Are you a Mining Geologist curious about how rocks and minerals influence processing and recovery? Did you do something about it and spend time with the Metallurgists in the Plant? Or are you a Metallurgist that always wondered why some ore blocks result in poor recoveries so actually went and spent time in the pit with the Mine Geo's to find out why?

If either of these scenarios are familiar, then we have the job for you

FMG is seeking mining professionals that understand the inherent multidisciplinary nature of Geometallurgy and are comfortable operating between the Geological, Metallurgical and Mine Planning domains.

This role will be responsible for supporting Operations Planning processes through technical investigations and incorporating Geometallurgical data into existing resource and mining models that will assist the Iron Bridge Operation by enabling superior mine to mill predictability and optimisation of the Iron Bridge Ore Processing Facility.

Iron Bridge is a greenfield operation and has the largest fixed plant asset across all of Fortescue Operations

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Work with existing Mine Geology and Geometallurgy teams to determine key material type assemblages, minerals and processing performance to establish Geometallurgical domains within the Iron Bridge magnetite deposit
  • Be the technical interface between the Operations Planning Geology/Mine Planning teams and the Plant Operations Metallurgy team
  • Work with Resource Modelling and Reconciliation teams to integrate Geometallurgical data & product predictions into planning models and systems to optimise the Mine to Mill process
  • Analyse, report and optimise daily, weekly and monthly reconciliation processes to closely monitor product grades and mass recoveries against predictions
  • Reviewing, scoping, and supporting Geometallurgical drilling and Metallurgical test work programs
  • Supporting the development of predictive Geometallurgical variables for use in planning models
  • Manage and build relationships with other Planning subfunctions and key Operational and Functional stakeholders

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in mine geology and/or processing, including strong reconciliation experience and data interrogation
  • An understanding of plant SCADA and metal accounting systems
  • An understanding of iron ore mineralogy (hematite or magnetite), deposit types and Geology and their influences on processing performance and efficiency
  • Solid knowledge of ore processing infrastructure and equipment, including crushing, grinding, magnetic separation and thickening
  • Understanding of assay and test work laboratory procedures relevant to iron ore processing
  • Experience working with external vendors on material testing and analysis programmes
