Inner West Area Mental Health Service (IWAMHS) Hospital Outreach Post-Suicidal Engagement

  • The HOPE team represents one of two Post Discharge Mental Health Support Programs offered by IWAMHS. The Engage program supports individuals who present to the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Emergency Department (ED) in mental health crisis and who are not referred to community mental health services
  • The team works closely with the IWAMHS Emergency Mental Health Team located within the Royal Melbourne Hospital Emergency Department
  • ENGAGE and HOPE provide specialised mental health support for individuals following mental health crisis and presentation to the RMH Emergency Department (ED), or those assessed by Police, Ambulance and Clinical Response (PACER) and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry who are not referred to community mental health services
  • We are a small, supportive clinical team who are passionate about supporting individuals and their families and carers following mental health crisis

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

  • Be a valuable source of practical advice, support which can reduce the isolation that carers can experience especially trhough times of crisis
  • Acknowledge the critical role of family/carers in recovery as well as the importance of linking family/carers into support for themselves
  • As a CPSW you will support carers and family members by providing direct peer support to any family member/carer within the service through facetoface or telephone/online meetings
  • You will provide carers with emotional and practical support and help to identify their information and support needs

Your Contribution

  • You must have significant previous or current experience of supporting an adult with mental ill health who has used public mental health services
  • You enjoy working and supporting others
  • You have a demonstrated ability to engage individuals or families through telephone, face to face or online meetings in an empathic manner
  • You have the ability to share your personal experience appropriately for the benefit of other carers
  • You understand peer support principles
  • Resilience, empathy, selfawareness, excellent communication and interpersonal skills
