Salary ranging from $116,211 to $128,061 + super (Grade 9/10)**In this role you will lead and participate in investigations into councils in NSW, including councillor misconduct matters (including pecuniary interest matters), council maladministration, compliance and other issues including performance issues in respect to local government. The purpose of the role is to provide accountability for decisions and the conduct of councils and council officials to promote good governance in local councils; to act as a deterrent to maladministration and poor conduct and, by undertaking the role, to promote public confidence in local government generally.


Key Accountabilities

  • Examine and review the conduct and performance of councils, council staff, councillors and delegates to ensure compliance with their obligations and statutory responsibilities.
  • Undertake preliminary enquiries into matters to determine, as early as possible, whether intervention is required in order to respond quickly.
  • Conduct investigations, preliminary enquiries and reviews involving research, evidence gathering, and interviews in accordance with legislative requirements and to a standard that can withstand legal review.
  • Prepare reports on the conduct of investigations and preliminary enquiries to a standard required for the Deputy Secretary's and NCAT's decision making roles.
  • Review and investigate public interest disclosures about local government authorities.
  • Analyse issues and prepare documentation for Ministerial interventions in accordance with the _Local Government Act 1993_ and provide oversight and review of the implementation of such interventions to ensure council compliance with the intervention action.

Essential requirements

  • Extensive experience in the conduct of formal investigations, evidence gathering and compliance review processes.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Local Government sector, its operating environment and governing legislation.
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent, relevant professional experience and/or training
