Position Description:

The Finance Group is looking to fill an EL1 (Assistant Director) role in the Budget Estimates Section.


The Budget Estimates section in Budget Development Branch lead the economic modelling and forecasting of Social Security special appropriations; these include key income support payments such as the JobSeeker Payment, Family Tax Benefit, Age Pension and Disability Support Pension.


The section works closely with the Social Security policy areas to provide timely and accurate Budget advice and part of the vision for the team is to function as trusted advisors for our stakeholders.

We are seeking an EL1 officer to lead in our economic and financial research, modelling infrastructure refinement as well as coordinating key stakeholder groups.

- demonstrate leadership in economic and financial research, supporting a better understanding of how the Commonwealth Social Security system interacting with the economic cycles
- analyse fiscal policy design and decipher the economic characteristics of the latest fiscal policy instruments in the Commonwealth Budget
- undertake continuous improvement in the internal modelling infrastructures, in both financial and statistical environments
- demonstrate initiative in project management, including key projects that enhance data preparation and model development
- coordinate key stakeholder groups including the NDIS finance team, the Disability Employment Services finance team and the National Redress Scheme finance team
- mentor and coach junior staff and contribute to a team culture that values collaboration, continuous improvement, innovation and exceptional achievement of high quality.


Eligibility / Additional Requirements:

To be eligible for employment with Department of Social Services (the department), you must be an Australian citizen. An applicant's suitability for employment with the Department will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This will include an identity and criminal history background check.


Eligibility to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance:

The suitable applicant must also obtain and maintain a security clearance conducted by the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).

Applicants also must be able to establish their background as checkable to be considered eligible for a security clearance.

Any gaps or periods of time spent overseas for 12 or more months (cumulative) that cannot be verified by an Australian referee is deemed uncheckable, rendering the applicant ineligible for a security clearance.

Background history must cover 5 / 10 years (Baseline / Negative Vet 1 or Negative Vet 2) of employment, education, residential, criminal history and anything else specified by the AGSVA.

The suitable applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information to fulfil this process.
