The Role

This position is based at Defence Plaza Melbourne but upon negotiation can be undertaken at other Defence locations in Victoria.

Within the Estate Policy and Environment function, the APS6 Estate Environmental Manager is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex environmental management work within an integrated workforce.

As a senior environment professional you will be responsible for environment management (including opportunities in heritage) across a range of bases including (but not limited to) Simpson Barracks, Victoria Barracks, HMAS Cerberus, Fishermans Bend, RAAF East Sale and RAAF Point Cook where you will provide detailed technical environment management advice, professional and policy advice, across areas including:

  • Land management.
  • Soil and water contamination.
  • Biodiversity.
  • Heritage.
  • Pollution prevention.
  • Sustainable use of the Defence estate.


Experience in stakeholder engagement around complex environmental issues is required to anticipate and respond to customers while meeting Defence's goal to be a leader in environmental management.


As part of a team you will coach others, manage workflows and take the lead in setting priorities for soil conservation works.

The role involves a mix of office and site based work, and travel to regional and remote Defence operational sites and Training Areas is required.


About our Team

You will be joining a dynamic team of environmental professionals based in the South East Zone which stretches from Wagga Wagga to Hobart.

The team contribute skills across all aspects of environmental management including heritage, biodiversity management, pollution prevention and resource minimisation. The team is operational, continuously seeks innovative ways to protect and enhance Defence environmental assets while ensuring capability continues.


As a valued member you will continue to professionally develop your environmental expertise, remain informed about local and national organisational issues, maintaining your enthusiasm and commitment to best practice ensuring the Zone's ISO14001 system remains robust and effective.


You will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Degree, qualification in environmental management and relevant experience (A degree qualification is mandatory).
  • Ability to meet Defence obligations, deliver environment management in accordance with Defence environmental policies, procedures and Commonwealth legislation.
  • Deep understanding of one or more of the following: catchment management systems, heritage soil conservation works, regenerative landscape approach to catchment management systems, biodiversity and pollution prevention.
  • Monitor and deliver environment management programs aligning with Defence's ISO14000 environment management system, assessing environment risks and developing strategic responses.
  • Ability to identify and advocate for efficiencies and improvements in environmental management across Defence estate including training areas to meet current and future environment challenges.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders from all levels to communicate Defence's environment policy requirements using your negotiation and community education skills.
  • Work collaboratively within a geographically dispersed team to deliver Defence environment objectives and build team knowledge.
  • Analyse and prioritise business practices furthering Defence's environmental policy objectives while identifying and advising on environmental risks and their mitigations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, negotiation and communication skills to achieve environmental outcomes.

  • A driver's licence and a willingness to travel.
