The Department of Parliamentary Services provides support to all Members of Parliament for the recruitment and selection of their staff.

On behalf of Nick McGowan MP, Member for North-Eastern Metro Region, we are now recruiting for an Electorate Officer (Grade 2).


Electorate Officer - Legal Officer, Nick McGowan MP, Member for North-Eastern Metro Region


As Legal Officer (employed under Part 4 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005: 'electorate officer') you will work in the Office of Nick McGowan MP, Victorian Member of parliament for North-Eastern Metropolitan Region and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Scrutiny of Government, you will be primarily responsible for assisting with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and legal duties, including constituent work where required.


About the Role
You will play an important role in providing services to assist the Member of Parliament. Your work will require a high degree of trust and integrity.

Confidentiality is a key requirement when interacting with all stakeholders, including constituents and visitors to the office or in the community.


Your key responsibilities include:


  • Advising the Member in respect to FOI processes and legislative requirements.
  • Undertaking reviews, preparing requests, responding to correspondence, instructing in Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) matters, and using a range of alternative dispute resolution techniques to resolve outstanding requests.
  • Engaging with Members of Parliament in respect to scrutiny of government matters.
  • Engaging as required with the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC), the Victorian Ombudsman and the Victorian Auditor-General's Office.
  • Responding where required to requests for further information from all agencies or bodies.
  • Undertaking projects and general legal tasks, including writing legal briefs, letters, and providing advice, including in respect to constituency matters.
  • Creating and capturing accurate and complete records of the activities undertaken in the course of this position.
  • Any other reasonable and related duties as required.
You will preferably have the following skills and experience:

  • A thorough knowledge of the operation of law, legislation and regulations, particularly FOI law and administrative reviews at VCAT and the Courts.
  • The ability to analyse and interpret legislative and policy documents.
  • Previous experience in lodging and managing FOI requests.
  • Previous experience working for a law firm or international or government agency or body.
  • A law degree is preferable (with or without having obtained a practising certificate).
