Working within Qantas Group Safety Services, the Principal Fatigue Specialist is responsible for providing Fatigue, Sleep Health, Fatigue Risk Management expertise, advice, innovation and support across all Qantas Group Airlines to enhance safety risk management and assure regulatory compliance.


The role includes integrating fatigue risk management requirements into safety management and business activities, including fatigue management in operational and people safety risk assessments, design and procurement, change management, job/task design, selection and training, investigations, audits, and safety reporting/data analysis.


The Principal Fatigue Specialist is required to assist in the collection of fatigue and sleep data within scientific data collection studies, and the interpretation of scientific data to assist in the development of risk management strategies to mitigated fatigue physiological performance impairment.

They are also required to carry out risk-based training needs analyses and develop and implement fatigue, sleep health and fatigue risk management training and assessment materials.


Key responsibilities and experience include:

  • Development of fatigue risk related policy, standards, tools and processes to enhance Safety Management Systems
  • Overseeing and monitoring regulatory requirements ensuring compliance for SMS and FRMS regulations. Including CASA, National Heavy Vehicle (NHVR) and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulatory requirements
  • Manage provision of specialist fatigue and FRMS advice in the analysis of data. Including Fatigue Reporting trends, biomathematical model outputs and Safety Performance Indicators
  • Conducting SMS health checks for Fatigue Risk Management compliance and continual improvements
  • Conducting riskbased training needs analysis (RBTNA), developing human factors, fatigue and FRMS training, education and assessment materials
  • Establishing, managing and participating in safety committees, fatigue panels, and other management meetings
  • Establishing and maintaining positive ongoing working relationships with key stakeholders across multiple business divisions within Qantas Group, Pilot, Cabin and Engineering Associations
  • Development of sleep health and personal fatigue management wellbeing programs
  • Reviewing scientific papers and safety publications regarding fatigue, sleep science and fatigue risk management to further develop FRM processes
  • Maintaining of Group wide biomathematical model program. Including roster platformmodelling tool interface, and training of model users
  • Conducting Fatigue Impairment Assessments for Safety Investigations
  • Development and monitoring of Fatigue Safety Performance Indicators (SPI) reporting and analysis across Group Airlines
  • Minimum 5 years applied experience in fatigue risk management
  • Tertiary qualifications in human factors, psychology, fatigue risk management or a related discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the technical and regulatory requirements in the aviation industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the use of biomathematical fatigue modelling tools, fatigue data collection processes and analysis, and interpretation of fatigue impairment performance physiological factors.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in fatigue risk management, human factors and safety management systems.
  • Experience integrating fatigue risk management into safety management systems.
  • Experience and qualifications in training design, development and delivery.
  • Operational experience within a highrisk industry (preferably aviation) as a safety professional.
  • Strong customer focus with the ability to build constructive and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
