Position Information:


Chalmers Road School is a K-12 school for Specific Purposes (SSP) located in Strathfield that provides educational programs for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and may have other concurrent disabilities.

There are 12 classes of 80 students enrolled with 86% of the students coming from a non-English speaking background. The school provides personalised educational programs to enable all students to reach their potential and independence for adult life.

Chalmers Road School promotes a positive learning environment using Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) across all environments and learning experiences.

There is a strong community value at Chalmers Road School with ongoing support for families and effective partnerships within the community.


Selection Criteria:

In addition to the general selection criteria,

  • Approval to teach and/or experience to teach and lead special education for students with moderate/severe intellectual disabilities, Autism, sensory and physical impairments, challenging behaviours and complex healthcare needs, K1
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead and implement current research and evidencebased practice into whole school teaching and learning programs that establish high expectations for success.
  • High level systems understanding demonstrating organisational and instructional leadership skills with the ability to engage, inspire and support staff, whilst balancing classroom teaching and the complex administrative role of being a leadership team member.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and work collaboratively, proactively and professionally with colleagues, parents, carers, school learning and support officers, support agencies and the wider school community.
  • Demonstrated capacity to create a culturally inclusive environment where all students are known, valued and cared for and engage a diverse, whole school community to contribute to an inclusive and cohesive school culture.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively as a leader to reflect on school practices, further develop staff capacity and strategically lead in supporting the implementation of the school's Strategic Improvement Plan

General Selection Criteria:


  • Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
  • Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
  • Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
  • Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
