About the role


An exciting opportunity is presented for an individual with a genuine interest in Geriatric Medicine who wants to undertake training in this speciality with the Aged and Extended Care Services, a Professorial geriatric medicine service linked to the University of Adelaide.

The advanced training positions are based at one of South Australia's leading acute referral, teaching, and research centres, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with a research precinct, the Basil Hetzel Institute.

A $314 million redevelopment is currently advanced at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which will see state-of-the-art general rehabilitation inpatient facilities at this campus, complementing existing day rehabilitation facilities.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is already home to a 20-bed inpatient psychogeriatric medicine unit.


Accredited for two core years of advanced training in geriatric medicine, rotations could include experience in Inpatient Geriatric Medicine (Geriatric Evaluation and Management & Acute Geriatrics), Orthogeriatric Medicine, Acute Medical Unit Liaison Service, Rural Ambulatory Geriatric Evaluation and Management (Port Lincoln and Whyalla), Psychogeriatric Medicine, Outpatients (including falls and cognitive clinics), community geriatric medicine and Transition Care Program.


A multi-faceted role where you will gain a diverse range of experience, you will be responsible for managing the care of all patients allocated to current department in consultation with the responsible Registrars, Consultants, Nurses and Allied Health professionals.

Able to function effectively within a fast-paced environment, you will maintain a high standard of patient care for inpatients and outpatients and provide an effective and accurate clinical handover of patient care at the change of daily shifts and the change of a clinical attachment.

Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to actively contribute to continuous quality improvement and education activities, participating in the department's CME, research and teaching program.


A team player who can operate effectively as part of a team or individually, you will demonstrate competency in routine and common procedural ward-based skills.

You will possess high-level skills in negotiation and communication, exhibiting the ability to display genuine empathy for patients and their relatives and family.

Able to work under pressure without compromising patient care, you will have proven skills in problem-solving and decision-making at both the clinical and the individual levels.
