Agency Purpose


The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The Team


The AEC Command Centre (AECCC) and Protective Security section comprises three key functions within the team which includes Protective Security, the AECCC Watch Office and the Network Operational Communications (NOC).

Protective Security's role is to build security awareness within AEC, empowering our people to undertake risk-informed, security conscious business practices as part of their day-to day activities.


The team provides support to the broader organisation on all matters relating to protective security in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and agency specific policies and procedures.

The team promotes a positive security culture through easy-to-use tools and easy to access awareness campaigns, which enhances AEC capability, grows the public's confidence, and keeps our people and business safe.

The AEC Command Centre and Protective Security section is part of the Electoral Integrity and Media Branch.


The Opportunity
The Election Security Officer supports the protective security team implement physical security and security governance projects, within the AEC.

Your skills will be used to uplift the AEC's security posture around the country in the lead up to the next federal election.


This is a busy and challenging role where your expertise will enhance the physical security and governance outcomes for the AEC.

Success in this role will require the ability to operate and deliver in a highly dynamic environment, and the ability to support effective engagement between the protective security team and key business stakeholders.

There may be a requirement to work extended hours and overtime for the period of election events.

You may be required to perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed from time to time and travel interstate to undertake security assessments as required.

The position is non-ongoing till 30 June 2025.


To excel you'll have:

  • Experience in conducting security risk assessments and developing risk management strategies, or a willingness to learn and develop expertise in this area.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Knowledge of security systems and their implementation within the physical environment.
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively impart technical information to nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Proven the ability to provide professional advice and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders on security risk mitigation which aligns with leading practice, policy, and legislation.
  • Ability to ensure security information systems are accurate and kept up to date and assist in the conduct of regular security audits.

  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the Negative Vetting 1 security clearance required for this role.
