The Role


The Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Centre is seeking to appoint a highly-capable academic at the Research Associate level.

The MARS Centre is an Industry Collaboration Centre of ECU, funded by the WA Government through the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS).


The MARS Centre has three primary objectives:


Collaborate with end users to lead and translate innovative, cutting-edge research that aims to create mentally healthy mining workplaces, build a culture of safety and respect, and prepare the sector for workplace safety in the future.


Build sector-wide capability, with a focus on upskilling current mining managers and professionals by developing and delivering mining WHS curriculum initiatives that are accessible, practical, education and engaging.


Engage stakeholders within WA's mining industry, providing support and new evidence to guide better practice, particularly in the management of WHS, as well as respect and inclusion at work.

The research focus of the MARS Centre team is centred around three key themes:
Creating mentally healthy workplaces

Building a culture of safety and respect

Preparing for workplace safety in future mining.


The multidisciplinary MARS Centre team is comprised of globally recognised scholars in the fields of psychosocial risk, human factors, safety science, occupational health and safety, human resource management, and diversity and inclusion, alongside several early career researchers and HDR students.

Working closely with the Centre Director, the successful applicant will be expected to carry out a full range of Research Associate work to support the team across a number of different research projects and engagement activities.

Key Criteria


The successful applicant will have:

A doctorial qualification in a relevant discipline.

Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative techniques, with expertise in either or both approaches.

Research focussed within one of more of the three MARS Centre research themes noted above.

Proven history of successfully writing reports for academics and industry audiences.

Outstanding written skills.

Excellent organisational skills.

Strong initiative and drive.

Effective interpersonal communication and stakeholder liaison skills.

Proven history of contributing to external funding proposals would be an advantage.

Ability to commence work by 10 January 2024 (or before by agreement).

Benefits and Remuneration

This full-time, fixed term position attracts a salary of $110,065 - $130,045 p.a plus 9.5% University superannuation contribution.
