Are you looking for a Workshop & Prototyping Manager role in Sydney? My client is a global innovator of highly complex medical/healthcare devices looking for an experienced Manager to provide prototyping services to the product design and other teams in the technology development department, using tool room equipment and rapid prototyping machines.

The Role


In this Workshop & Prototyping Manager role, you'll report to the Head of Product Development and be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Workshop & Prototyping function.

You will also lead, manage, and coach a small team of Workshop & Prototyping Technicians who provide reactive and proactive services to the business.


Key responsibilities:

  • Manage the provision of prototyping services to technology development teams using tool room equipment and rapid prototyping machines
  • Build prototypes, fixtures and equipment specified by designers and engineers and assist them in specifying parts to suit the available machines
  • Build industrial design concept models developed by the IDHF team for usability and market analysis testing
  • Work with external vendors to develop prototype, component, and production solutions
  • Operate and maintain workshop equipment such as CNC mills & lathe and manual milling & lathes as well as sheet metal equipment
  • Operate and maintain rapid prototyping machines, e.g., FDM, SLA, lasercutter, vacuumcast, silicone elastomer parts using rapidprototyped moulds
  • Operate and maintain inspection equipment, i.e., MicroVu CMM
  • Practice and enforce safe workshop operation including WHS requirements
  • Lead, manage and coach junior members of staff
  • Monitor that team members are executing their responsibilities in a correct and timely fashion
  • Lead the Continuous Improvement Process to aid growth, scalability and efficiency of the department and processes
  • Plan training and mentor team members in alignment with the individual's personal professional development plan

Skills and experience- 10 years of hands-on working experience in an engineering workshop as a machinist or toolmaker (Cert III Eng. - Mech Trade (Fitter/Machinist)- Ability to read, interpret and produce detailed component drawings with understanding of

tolerances- Experience in managing workshop activities via workflow management systems i.e. Jira- Ability to assess capital investment opportunities for the purchase & ROI of new workshop & prototyping equipment- Experience with CNC machine programming, operating and setting skills and conventional machining skills to fine tolerances (ideally in HSM works)- High level proficiency with mechanical workshop equipment and techniques- Practical knowledge of using quality control measuring instruments- Comprehensive understanding of mechanical design engineering, CAD modelling, Geometric tolerancing and product design for manufacture- Able to develop and implement ideas into CAD models using 3D CAD (ideally Solidworks)- Experience of leading technical workshop-based staff
