    We house theworld's most important and extensive collection of cultural information and material, andwe provide leadership, publish, and promote greater understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    We create opportunities for people the worldover to engage with and be transformed by the knowledge, the culture, and the story of Australia's Indigenous peoples.

    We are Australia's national institution for leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.

    What we do We care for a priceless collection, including films, photographs, video, and audio recordingsas well as the world's largest collection of printed and other resource materials for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies.

    We undertake and encourage scholarly,ethical, community-based research in a variety of sectors, including health, native title,languages, and education.
    Our publishing house, Aboriginal Studies Press, regularlypublishes outstanding writing that promotes Australian Indigenous cultures.

    Our activities affirm and raise awareness of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

    Our functions are established under the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

    These functions are to:

    • provide access to a national collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
    culture and heritage.

    • use that national collection to strengthen and promote knowledge and
    understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

    provide leadership in the fields of:
     Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research; and activities relating to collections associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait

    Islander peoples; and use (including use for research) of that nationalcollection and other collections containing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.


    • lead and promote collaborations and partnerships among the academic,research, non-government, business and government sectors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in support of the otherfunctions of the Institute.
    • provide advice to the Commonwealth on the situation and status of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

    About the Group
    The Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management, andpreservation of the AIATSIS Collection.
    The Group manages, describes, preserves, and digitisesthe AIATSIS Collection.
    About the Program Area The Collection Management Program sits within the Collection Services Group.
    Collection Management consists of the Archival Collections (Audiovisual, Photographic and Manuscript)and Collection Transformation units.

    Key operational activities of the program includecataloguing, accessioning, and describing the AIATSIS Audiovisual, Photographic and Manuscript collections to enhance discoverability of, and access to, these collections for all Australians.

    The Program is also responsible for delivering the Collection Transformationprogram which aims to reshape the work of Collection Services Group through new collectionsystems, workflows, and processes.

    Collection Management works closely with Collection Development and Care, Collection Preservation and Digitisation, and Collection Access teamsto support the discoverability and accessibility of the AIATSIS collection for all Australians.

    About the Role The Director, Collection Management, is responsible for the implementation of the AIATSISCollection Transformation Strategy which aims to reshape the work of Collection Services Group through new collection systems, workflows, and processes as well as accessioning,describing and management of the Audiovisual, Manuscript and Photographic collections.

    Theposition comprises two units, Archival Collection and Collections Transformation.

    As part of thesenior leadership cohort, the Director will work collaboratively with the Executive Director andother directors within the Group as well as across the organisation in order to achieve AIATSISand Collection goals and strategically shape the organisation's culture and future direction.


    Key responsibilities include:

    • Managing and leading the operation of the program for the effective and efficient operation
    of the program, including administration, resource and financial management, staffmanagement and development, and program planning.


    • Providing strategic direction to the program, including developing business plans andpriorities and monitor performance.
    • Making high level decisions and take responsibility for the performance and output of theprogram.
    • Taking a lead role in the management and implementation of the Institute's collectiontransformation priorities and archival practices.
    • Providing high level expert advice on professional, technical, and administrative matters inrelation to the management and discoverability of the Collection in accordance withcorporate and program policies and plans.
    • Developing strategy, policies, priorities and operational practices and activities in support of AIATSIS and Collection Services Group objectives.
    • Providing written reports, statistics, submissions, and complex correspondence as required.
    • Engaging and managing stakeholders through collaboration, negotiation, and resolving
    conflict and managing sensitivities.

    The ideal candidate will come with the skills, experience and attributes shown below:

    • well-developed understanding of the collection development and management principleswithin a cultural institution or community organisation, particularly in relation to theappropriate management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural and heritagematerials, including an understanding of copyright legislation, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous cultural protocols, and related cultural safety issues.
    • understanding of contemporary archival and collection management and preservationpractices as well as relevant tools such as digital asset management, collectionmanagement and integrated library management systems.
    • ability to lead and manage a complex digital transformation project in a collectionmanagement/access context, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
    • ability to lead and inspire team through excellent people management, resilience, andcapability to manage competing priorities in changing environment.
