Position Summary

The Statistical Leadership Officer (SLO) is a specialist technical role, focusing on delivering expert statistical

advice and leadership across the AIHW.

The SLO provides expert guidance and leadership on statistical matters and, contributes to the

organisational strategy for the AIHW through the provision of:

  • Technical leadership and advice to senior management, executives, and other relevant stakeholders
on statistical matters and data analysis methodologies.

  • Continuous improvement in statistical processes and methodologies contributing to the institutes
overall data capabilities.

  • Leadership, including championing the Statistical and Analytical Methods Advisory Committee.
  • Support and advise the Statistical Leadership Committee.
  • Technical review and advice on the statistical work undertaken by AIHW business units.
  • Lead initiatives to build statistical capabilities within the institute, including the development and
management of training programs.

  • Maintenance of and enhancements to the Statistical Handbook, ensuring it reflects best practices
and latest methodologies.

  • Responsibility for development, enhancement and maintenance of relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Represent the AIHW in the wider APS initiatives relating to relevant technical matters.
  • Leadership and management of a small team of statistical advisors and support personnel.

  • The ability to provide technical leadership and communicate complex statistical concepts and
findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering a deeper understanding of

trends and outcomes.


  • A deep understanding of the AIHW's work program and requirements for high standards of technical
accuracy (or ability to quickly obtain this understanding).

Relevant qualifications in Statistics and statistical methods will be highly regarded.
