Position Overview:

As a growing organisation, MCRI is looking for a strategic Head of Intellectual Property to join the team.

The Head of Intellectual Property (IP) will lead a team to identify, capture, protect, and manage intellectual property (IP) across MCRI.

Core to the role is the accountability for the development and management of the Institute's IP strategy, policy, and procedures to enable effective capture and managing MCRI's IP to maximise commercial potential while containing costs.

This will involve an active promotion of the importance of IP protection across the Institute, proactive identification and evaluation of IP potential across research themes while working closely with various members of the Innovation team.

Key Accountabilities & Expected practices**:


  • Demonstration of exercising independent judgment and taking the initiative where processes are ambiguous/undefined.
  • Prioritisation of projects and good reporting systems provision of reports and contribution to report writing where requested.
  • Identification of opportunities to realise the impact, revenue, and operational cost savings
  • Develop and execute MCRI's IP strategy.
  • Lead and manage a team responsible for IP management.
  • Establish knowledge sharing and collaboration initiatives.
  • Support identification of commercialisation opportunities.
  • Provide strategic IP input for investment proposals.
  • Advise on IP issues in agreements and collaborations.

Selection Criteria:


  • Solid experience in IP management.
  • Patent and trademark qualifications eg, Patent and Trade Mark Attorney Registration
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and rapport with internal stakeholders (e.g. research staff) and external stakeholders (e.g. external patent counsel and external legal counsel).
  • Strong scientific background and qualifications eg, Ph.
D. level qualifications in a life science discipline.

  • Good understanding of legal and commercial risk

Conditions of Employment:


  • Working with Children & National Police Clearance.
