HSE Manager

The purpose of the HSE Manager role is to provide governance, guidance and support to operational teams delivering power projects within the Utilities line of business, with a focus on driving improvements in Health and Safety and Environmental performance by leveraging UGL's HSWEQ Strategy, HSEQ Management System, Assurance Program and One HSE Culture Program.


About the role:

Partner with Utilities Project Managers and site/project based HSE Resources to:

  • Implement UGL's HSEQ Management System, through coaching and completion of assurance activities (aligned to UGL's Assurance Plan).
  • Build HSE capability in Site/Project Teams, using the OneHSE Culture Program as platform to build from.
  • Respond to business development opportunities, including involvement in Tender responses to embed HSE expectations early in the project lifecycle.
  • Actively engage Project teams to identify how health and safety, environment, and quality outcomes are being achieved on site, and assist with addressing gaps where identified.
  • Take part in/facilitate Project Risk Workshops, building capability and sharing lessons from other projects.
  • Lead incident investigations for Severity 1, Severity 2 and PC1 events.
  • Monitor and report on achievement of Project HSE KPI's, working with the leadership team to address any identified deficiencies.
  • Monitor alignment with legal and client obligations, providing advice to Project Managers and projects/sites on changes or emerging trends that could impact the successful delivery of work; and
  • Provide generalist HSE support to Projects where required including end of month reporting requirements.
  • In addition to the above, this role is also required to:
  • Support the development, consultation, and implementation of HSEQ Management System content (Procedures, Tools etc.) including project specific management plans.
  • Complete audits and assurance activity (in accordance with the UGL Audit Schedule).
  • Provide advice and support ongoing compliance with UGL's certifications and accreditations (ISO45001, ISO9001, ISO14001, Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner)
  • Work with project teams to deliver gap analysis between UGL and Client HSE Requirements, identifying steps taken/action required to close identified gaps.
  • Investigate HSE incidents and occurrences to manage corrective actions and that Company and legislative reporting protocols are maintained.
  • Propose creation and/or modification of HSE documents within the HSEQ Management System.
  • Participate in or lead Performance Reviews for HSE Advisors and Coordinators.
  • Frequently travel to project sites to engage with project teams.
  • Conduct Critical Risk Protocol Safety Conversations and Observations.
  • Support the mobilization and start up of projects at site or when new project HSE advisors are engaged.

About you

  • Qualified in HSEQ or related field supported by solid experience in a managing a HSE teams, in a highrisk industry
  • Excellent knowledge of the relevant HSE legislation including environmental approval requirements for construction projects
  • Demonstrated capability in implementing HSEQ improvement programs/strategies
  • Experience in leading incident investigations for significant events.
  • Can demonstrate a knowledge of various commercial agreement strategies and it the indirect relationship they have on HSEQ management.
  • Experience in developing high performance teams involving multiple disciplines
  • Solid Influencing skills and the ability to achieve outcomes in an environment of managing complex stakeholder relationships, including key business partners
