Sexual Assault Counsellor

The Lower Hunter Sexual Assault Service is a close-knit and dynamic team that provides counselling to people across the life span who have experienced sexual assault, along with non-offending family members.


The service is based in Maitland at the HNE High Street Campus, and also provides outreach to sites including Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and Singleton.


Lower Hunter Sexual Assault Service has a strong supportive culture and prides itself on welcoming, supporting and mentoring new team members.

What the role looks like:


  • Face to face counselling, along with the option for virtual/telehealth sessions where required.
  • Managing a diverse caseload of survivors of sexual assault across the lifespan, as well as nonoffending parents and carers.
  • Providing traumainformed care, and utilising diverse evidencebased practices to positively influence the lives of survivors of sexual assault.
  • Providing education, consultation and health promotion to other service providers and community groups.


Staff are supported with regular professional development opportunities, and supervision is highly valued as part of ensuring sustainable practice for the team.

There is a significant support system in place for staff, including:

  • Frequent, individualised mentoring and orientation from colleagues and the team leader of the service.
  • Regular clinical supervision in line with the AASW supervision requirements.
  • Monthly management supervision meetings with the team leader, to ensure ongoing support is offered regarding caseload management, professional development opportunities and staff rounding.
  • Support to access free training through the Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) that is specific to working with survivors of interpersonal violence.
  • Staff are also encouraged to pursue professional development opportunities within specific therapeutic modalities to support their clinical toolkits in practice.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).
