- $117K - $131K per annum + superannuation - noting that our EA increases by 3.25% in July 2023


About the role

As a public affairs, advocacy or communications professional, the Advocacy Lead leads Glen Eira City Council's advocacy framework and campaigns to raise the profile and understanding of our advocacy activities.


The Advocacy Lead is a skilled networker who develops, implements and monitors the effectiveness of Council's advocacy framework to provide timely strategic advice to the organisation, the mayor and the Council on advocacy objectives and approaches.


The influential role works with the Council and senior leaders in the organisation to identify, establish and foster relationships with key external stakeholders, such as elected representatives and government departments, to advance Glen Eira City Council's advocacy objectives and deliver impactful outcomes.


Other responsibilities include:
- developing and manage innovative and integrated campaigns to ensure that the community is actively informed and engaged as part of Council's advocacy efforts;
- identifying new opportunities for council to collaborate with elected representatives, community groups and peak bodies to advance our advocacy objectives;
- coordinating Council's position on key issues and policies ahead of meetings of peak bodies;
- providing timely strategic advice to the mayor, councilors, CEO and broader organisation on advocacy objectives and approaches;
- as part of the Communications, Engagement and Advocacy department leadership team, contributing to the continuous improvement of the department's culture, processes, and planning.


About you

You are an experienced networker with a background in politics, public affairs, communications, or stakeholder engagement in a political, in-house or agency environment.

You thrive on building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to develop and implement highly effective advocacy strategies.

You are a dedicated team player with sound judgement skills.

You have proven influencing skills with high emotional intelligence and self-awareness to deliver trusted and considered advocacy advice to senior management and elected representatives.

Politically adept, you can communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders to progress the Council's advocacy ambitions.


The following are also required:
- tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, public policy, political science, or a related discipline with extensive and diverse relevant experience;
- excellent and proven communication skills, including oral presentation and writing skills;
- extensive experience developing and implementing strategies aligned with organisational imperatives and providing high-level counsel to senior management and elected representatives; and
- the ability to develop policy options through research and analysis, including advocacy and lobbying activities.
