The Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) is seeking a talented Retail Manager to look after our inhouse and online retail spaces for an 18 month fixed term contract with possibility of extension.

The Retail Manager looks after all of the operations in the museum's retail space managing and supporting the retail team to deliver exceptional customer service and ensure a positive visitor experience from arrival to departure.


In this role you will manage the museum's commercial retail, online store and wholesale operations and the visual presentation of merchandise in the retail store.

As an experienced retail manager, you will have responsibility for the shop budgets to maximise efficiencies and profit margins.

You will set goals and targets, foster sales promotion techniques, marketing strategies and the development of innovative merchandising and customer service practices.


High level overview of responsibilities:


  • Endtoend operations of the Museum's retail store, including sales, merchandising and the organisation of the retail store, online store and other workspaces, customer service, internal team communications, account balancing, daily and monthly reconciling and reporting,
  • Professionally deal with a broad range of visitor enquiries.
  • Maximise the customer experience through exceptional team member interactions and store presentation.
  • Develop team members through feedback and coaching on retail standard operating procedures (SOPs), sales techniques, customer service, product knowledge, and online sales.
  • Maintaining inventories and pricing to ensure bestselling items are always available, and so that the product mix includes new lines to attract customers.
  • Build an effective business plan to increase online sales.

Selection Criteria:


  • Demonstrated ability to deliver exceptional Customer Service and sales, ideally in a cultural or retail environment, that enhances the visitor experience and ensures that retail conversions are above the industry standard.
  • Practical knowledge of retail sales margin, stock pricing and stock performance metrics, with advanced MS Excel skills and a proven ability to interpret data and prepare accurate, detailed reports for management.
  • Previous experience working with computerised retail systems and cash handling practices.
  • Experience leading customer facing sales teams with proven ability to supervise, inspire, train and develop the team to deliver revenue and customer satisfaction KPIs.
  • A high level of professional communication and liaison skills to represent the museum with visitors and contractors.
  • Be able to work weekends.
