About the Business Unit

Communication Services is part of the Department's People and Engagement Branch, which guides, enables, develops and promotes people management, capability and communication to improve the productivity and achievements of our people and the Department.

Communication Services is a highly-skilled, multi-disciplinary communication team which provides expert advice to DJAG's diverse business units.

It provides whole-of-agency and portfolio communications, manages corporate projects, provides effective communication tools and offers advice and support to DJAG business units.


It is comprised of three teams:

  • Strategic Communication
  • Online Services
  • Media Relations.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide highlevel media advice and issues and crisis management support to the ministerial office, the Director-General and senior officers.
  • Undertake daytoday liaison with the media on matters relating to the Department and portfolio.
  • Proactively identify and develop opportunities to promote departmental initiatives and achievements.
  • Work closely with Ministerial staff to prepare and implement media relations programs.
  • Research and write media releases, statements, speeches and news articles.
  • Undertake media monitoring tasks as part of an issues management strategy.
  • Manage and coordinate media and communication projects from inception through to completion.
  • Develop and deliver appropriate media training packages where required.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies, protocols and standards.
  • Oversee the work of, and provide leadership and support to media team staff members.
  • Actively participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing a wide range of communication services.
  • Participate in a roster to provide media management for critical incidents occurring after hours, including responding to related media inquiries.
How you will be assessed

  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, consultation, and negotiation skills and the ability to write and prepare speeches, media releases, briefing notes, correspondence and material for publication in a range of forms and as part of complex and detailed communication activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of media and communication strategies using a wide range of tools and channels targeting diverse clientele in a large and complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive relationships with stakeholders and clients and to proactively seek to understand clients' and stakeholders' needs and expectations, including providing high level advice in relation to strategic media, communication and issues management.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement best practice within a media and communication environment consistent with contemporary management models and the ability to implement the Queensland Government's priorities for the department.
  • Demonstrated high level leadership and accountability for project supervision, budget management and resource allocation, with emphasis on delivering timely and quality outcomes, leading and mentoring staff, and contributing to team objectives.
