Our Major Plants Branch consists of the operators and technical staff who coordinate and control operations of all Icon Water and sewerage assets.

The Opportunity


Our Major Plants Branch is looking for a keen learner and motivated individual to be our next Shift Operator - WIO Level 2.


You will work within a 24/7 shift roster and have responsibility for the operation of equipment, plant, and facilities at water and sewage treatment facilities in the ACT Region, with particular emphasis placed on the operations of the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre.

A day in the life

  • Under technical guidance and through following work instructions, you will operate, monitor and control the operation of the plant and related processes
  • Undertake detailed inspection, process sampling, and operational analysis, reporting on process performance and equipment operation as required
  • Safely take authorised and prescribed action as necessary to ensure optimum equipment and plant process operation and effectiveness
  • Prepare reports and logs of routine and corrective actions undertaken, as well as preparing reports as required on water and wastewater treatment plants operations, water and wastewater flows, and other assets as required
  • Provide assistance to supporting business groups with tests, measurements, investigations, and trials
  • Be part of an oncall roster group, providing afterhours support and attending water and wastewater treatment faults and failures as required.

Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience:


  • Cert III in Water Operations or ability to work towards completing
  • Relevant trade or Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering from an Australian TAFE Institution, or equivalent, or be able to demonstrate relevant skills, knowledge, and experience in water operations.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in the operation, monitoring, and control of waterrelated mechanical, electrical, and electronic assets, with the ability to:
  • Identify and report faulty equipment and process operations
  • Maintain shift records and operational logs
  • Expertly handle emergency situations related to major equipment failures or chemical leakages/spillages
  • Demonstrable experience in the use of computerised monitoring systems and equipment
  • The ability to work both collaboratively as part of a small team, as well as independently as needed, prioritising tasks in a highpressure/emergency situation
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and through written reports
  • Availability to work a 24/7 shift roster as required
