The Role

This is an opportunity for an EL1 or a high performing APS 6 officer for an initial period of three months, to start as soon as possible.

The opportunity is Canberra-based and full time.


Working within the multidisciplinary VET Information Branch, the VET USI and Data Policy Unit is responsible for the legislative and policy framework that is required to deliver the VET Data Streamlining (VDS) program.

The Unit also has policy and legislative responsibility for the VET Unique Student Identifier (USI). Current priorities include ongoing legislative reform and supporting the department's contribution to scoping of the National Skills Passport.

The Unit's work also includes supporting the Government's delivery of priorities from the National Skills Agreement and

Working Future:
the Australian Government's White Paper on Jobs and Opportunities. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to work in collaboration with states and territories to deliver reforms.


The VET USI and Data Policy Unit is seeking team members with strong communication, organisation and leadership skills, including experience in policy development and stakeholder engagement.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities of the Executive Level 1 may include:
  • Identify, engage and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to gain their feedback and support and/or input to proposed policy or program design.
  • Drafting new and updating existing policy and business requirements.
  • Draft program and policy communication documents in different formats, including consultation papers, facts sheets, meeting papers and talking points.
  • Consulting jurisdictions and stakeholders on new/changing policy and legislation.
  • Deregulation and privacy impact analysis.
  • Other tasks as required including preparing briefs, reports and correspondence.

  • Sound judgement, analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a range of strategic and operational issues simultaneously and resolve complex and sensitive issues effectively.

The Opportunity

This position is available to Ongoing Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and/or APS employees as a temporary transfer at level and/or a temporary performance (Acting) opportunity for a period of 6 months.
