Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 18 months, with possibility of extension up to a maximum period of three years.


A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment, however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.

The Opportunity


You will be part of a high performing team in the Data and Evaluation Branch providing leadership for evidence based decision making across the NIAA to support program and policy development and improve outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

The work of the Branch can be fast-paced and involves strategic thinking across a range of complex policies and programs.

The Data and Insights Team supports the NIAA to embrace data to support our vision, purpose and strategic objectives.

In particular, the team synthesises, analyses and communicates policy relevant insights to support evidence based decision making by NIAA and its partners.


Key responsibilities of the positions include:

  • Increasing data awareness and accessibility across the NIAA
  • Generating insights
  • Making critical data sets readily understood
  • Supporting NIAA Policy and Program areas to use data and generate insights.
Woden, ACT is the preferred location for this position, however other NIAA office locations may be considered.


These roles, at the EL1 level, will suit outcome-focused Data Professionals who enjoy data challenges and are energetic problem solvers who are able to think creatively, generate ideas and analyse situations from a variety of perspectives.

Qualification(s) in public health, epidemiology, social research, economics, statistics, data science or related fields would be beneficial.


Required technical skills and capabilities:

  • Competency (intermediate/advanced) in data visualisation (PowerBI, Qlik, Geospatial, Excel)
  • Competency (intermediate/advanced) in data analysis (Excel, SQL, DAX etc).

Required generic skills and capabilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, managing and delivering data activities in a timely manner, including an understanding of risk management
  • Critical thinking skills and an ability to analyse information from a range of data sources
  • Ability to quickly understand the scope of NIAA's key programs and activities
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and a demonstrated ability to develop positive and productive relationships across NIAA and with external stakeholders
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to tailor communication to different and diverse audiences
  • Welldeveloped organisational skills, including the ability to adapt to change, work with limited direction and manage competing priorities
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural competency.

Additional desirable skills for this role:

  • Ability to lead a small team
  • Willingness to embrace challenges
  • Strong Data literacy and aptitude to continue building these skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the population level outcomes that NIAA activities are seeking to support and how evidence can enhance policy and program delivery
  • Experience working in an operational delivery environment focused around data and insight generation
  • Experience in project management, including articulating objectives and purpose, setting timeframes, identifying risks and mitigation strategies, and defining resources required.

- ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
- willingness and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency.
