About the Role

The purpose of this position is to provide assistance and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families across Logan & Beaudesert Hospitals during their hospitalisation and follow-up treatment.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Officers work collaboratively with the broader multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the provision of appropriate and culturally sensitive services which contribute to improved health outcomes and the reduction of health inequalities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.


  • Fulfil the accountabilities and responsibilities of this role in accordance with Metro South's purpose and objectives, as outlined below.
  • Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, taking account of cultural, religious, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait patients and families in Inpatient, Emergency Department and Outpatient settings and contribute to patient wellbeing, discharge planning and to meeting continuity of care needs by way of referral to external agencies.
  • Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • While qualifications for this role are not mandatory, possession of a relevant health related and or community development certificate (or equivalence of qualifications) in public health, allied health, nursing, and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary/Acute Healthcare is highly desirable.
  • Skills and experience in working in complex health systems/environments is highly desirable.
  • Hospital Liaison Officers may be required, at times, to work after hours (by mutual agreement) to participate in relevant community and other stakeholder meetings/forums.
  • Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
  • The incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle as driving may be a significant task in the delivery of this position's objectives, proof of a current 'C' Class licence must be provided.
