Who we are

The Adaptation and New Industries division is responsible for the Australian Government's approach to climate change adaptation; climate risk assessment and management across the country and within the public sector; and the uplift of new renewable industries including Hydrogen and Offshore Renewables.

There are 6 branches within the division which work together to deliver the Australian Government's key programs, new policies and reforms to support Australia's transition to net zero emissions and adaptation to climate change, including the growth of new renewable industries.


The Climate Risk and Impacts branch contributes to enhancing Australia's understanding of climate change risks, developing climate risk capability and capacity, and providing climate information within Australian institutions.

It supports the government's climate risk management agenda, including delivery of the Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program and the National Climate Risk Assessment.

As a member of the Climate Risk and Impacts Branch, you will play a crucial role in assessing and addressing the risks associated with climate change across the Australian Public Sector.

This work is essential for understanding and managing the challenges posed by climate change to Australia's environment, industries and communities.

Climate Risk Section drives climate risk and opportunity management across the Australian public sector.

It is developing and implementing the Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program, which includes:

- the Australian Government's Climate Risk approach
- the Climate Risk Management Framework
- climate risk tools, and
- a support service.

The section provides climate risk expertise and support to DCCEEW as the enterprise climate change specialist risk area.

This will include leading and supporting DCCEEW climate risk and opportunity assessments and developing the annual DCCEEW climate risk disclosure.


The section is responsible for climate risk reporting standards and is uplifting climate risk capability within the Australian public sector.

The section is also looking to expand its role in transitional risk in government policy. Beyond the Program the section is leading work to embed climate risk and emissions impacts into government decision making.


The National Climate Risk Assessment Section is responsible for delivering Australia's first national climate risk assessment, which will prioritise our climate risks and opportunities for adaptation action - by examining our how vulnerable and exposed we are to climate hazards, now and into the future.


The section will lead DCCEEW's role in the project which will be co-delivered with the Australian Climate Service and will require collaboration with First Nations peoples, Commonwealth agencies, states and territories, academics, and other external expertise.


The Job
The successful applicants will undertake policy and/or project management work as part of a small team.

Depending on the section, you may be involved in activities such as:


  • Preparing written briefs and materials for Ministers and the departmental executive
  • Developing climate risk policy, including for transitional climate risks and climate impacts.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of the National Climate Risk Assessment, collaborating with colleagues from across the department and external stakeholders including other government agencies, industry, market bodies, and consumer representatives.
  • Coordinating the delivery of climate information and services within the Australian public sector.
  • Implementing the systems and processes required to develop the Australian Government's capability to identify, assess, prioritise, manage and disclose its climate risks.
  • Providing specialist advice on climate risk management in response to queries from other public sector entities.
  • Contributing to strategic thinking and direction for future policy and program design.
  • Designing and managing projects in alignment with relevant Commonwealth policies.
  • Contributing to the planning, drafting, editing, and communication of papers, reports and reviews.
