The Role

The duties of the PEOSA will include:

  • Support the identification and assessment of EO safety vulnerabilities and risks, and the implementation, monitoring and assurance of controls in order to ensure EO risks are minimised and managed appropriately across the whole of DSTG.
  • Maintain the DSTG Explosives Management System (XMS) in accordance with Commonwealth, State and Defence regulations to enable staff and environmental safety and organisational compliance and assurance.
  • Support the EO Science Safety Advisor in reviewing and endorsing safe systems of work and procedures, including trials plans, risk assessments and safe operating procedures (SOPs) for DSTG operations and activities involving EO.
  • Plan, support, conduct and assess training for staff involved in EO activities and operations, including the delivery of EO awareness and refresher training.
  • Advise and support the DSTG EO assurance program through the inspection and monitoring of DSTG EO facilities, licenses, procedures and practices to ensure they comply with all relevant Defence, Commonwealth and State regulations; consistent with world's best practice for safety and environmental aspects. The PEOSA works within the Explosive Ordnance Safety and Management team and reports to the Director Explosive Ordnance Safety and Management (DEOSM).

The APWE branch has unique sovereign capabilities and expertise in weapons and explosive ordnance (WEO) science and technology (S&T).

This capability is strategically important for Defence supporting all stages of the munition life cycle by sustaining current weapons and transitioning next generation technology to ADF capability.


  • Providing advice to senior leadership on explosive safety matters.
  • Promoting a positive EO safety culture of continuous improvement and best practice.
  • Identification and effective management of EO Safety vulnerabilities and risk.
  • Preparing EO safety performance reports, update briefs, technical reports and bulletins.
  • Department of Defence Explosive Ordnance regulation and assurance.
  • Ability to represent DSTG in the EO Safety domain across the Department of Defence.
