Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine Trainee positions are available at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (SCH), for the 2024 Clinical Year, for up to 12 months from 05 February 2024 to 02 February 2025.


Paediatric ICU Trainee responsibilities include care of critically ill infants and children in ICU as well as assisting in the management of complex patients in the Emergency Department and general paediatric wards as required.

Trainees will work with a team of paediatric trainees, ICU trainees, RMO's and experienced nursing staff. There are senior trainees (Provisional Fellows) and consultants on site during the day, evenings and weekends. Senior support is available 7 days a week throughout the day.

It is a requirement of this position that the Trainee will be available to participate in scheduled shift work rosters and a sick relief on-call roster.

The Children's ICU formal education program focuses on practical management of common paediatric conditions.

Selection Criteria:


  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
  • Minimum three years postgraduate experience
  • 24 months paediatric experience or 24 months acute care experience; Paediatric ICU experience is preferable
  • Demonstrated competence in paediatric life support with qualifications in APLS or equivalent. Please provide details
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in procedures in paediatric environments including venepuncture, intravenous cannulation, and resuscitation. Please provide an example
  • Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment. Please provide an example
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and commitment to College training and willingness to teach medical students, doctors in training and other health professionals
  • Proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, to organise, plan and manage competing tasks and ensure appropriate management of the patient. Please provide an example

Information and Application:

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).

Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.

New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. This is a Category A position.
