About the role:


Metro Trains Melbourne operates a vast array of operational control system technologies that support the safe and reliable delivery of trains services for the public - some old, some world leading.

You'll never get bored maintaining such a varied range of systems, including Victoria's largest IP Based CCTV network, advanced audio communication systems - both RF and landline based, security and access control systems and Passenger Information and safety systems.

You'll also be exposed to some level 1 and 2 server/VM/networking infrastructure maintenance when the time comes.


As part of our Operational Control System (OCS) team, you'll work with Station staff, Operations and control room teams, as well as major projects such as the upcoming Metro Tunnel to ensure new capabilities meet our high standards.

You'll conduct routine maintenance on our extensive control systems network, escalating those trickier instances as relevant.

You'll be part of a close team where your contribution and suggestions for smarter and more efficient ways of working are embraced and implemented.


This position will participate in a rolling shift roster, with mostly days and some afternoons to ease you into the new team.

Initially, weekends and nights will be a rare occurrence, the focus will be Monday to Friday to begin.

Main duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work in a team carrying out defect rectification and planned maintenance activities, ensuring functionality and availability of OCS assets that meet pre-defined service levels.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and operational staff to interpret fault descriptions and issues.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance activities across a variety of OCS technologies.
  • Perform tests, measurements and investigations to repair faults on OCS assets and systems.
  • Identify significant network or system wide issues, escalating for level 3 or vendor service assistance.
  • Use EWP's/Ladders/other equipment as required to safely access and maintain OCS devices.
  • Maintain accurate task records/details in MTM's online fault and asset management system.
  • Routinely work autonomously (including after normal business hours) to rectify defects.
  • Assist with the installation, upgrades and maintenance of office structured cabling supporting operational technology infrastructure, ensuring all works are to MTM and ACMA standards

About you:

  • You have completed your Tafe or trade qualification in Electronics, communication or related field, and successfully built on those skills for at least 35 years, supporting a wide range of technologies, preferably in a critical infrastructure or utilities environment.
  • You are a great problem solver who can resolve technical issues using a common sense and logical approach.
  • You're not phased dealing with a range of stakeholders, including operations, senior engineers, contractors, passengers, our senior managers or even shaking the hand of our CEO
  • You'll have a full drivers' license and possibly relevant qualifications such as operate EWP plant, working at heights, or your ACMA cablers' license.
  • Previous railway industry experience certainly isn't a mandatory requirement we'll make sure you're extensively trained with the full bag of skills you will need to work safely and effectively in one of the country's greatest railway networks.
