About the lab

NOTR is led by Dr Joseph (Joe) Sia (radiation oncologist, clinician-scientist), and is focussed on addressing the growing clinical burden of brain metastases.

We approach this by deeply studying the immunobiology of brain metastases using patient samples and pre-clinical models, as well as researching how radiation therapy - an established and integral treatment for brain cancers - can create therapeutic windows to leverage with immunotherapy for brain metastases.

Our group operates within the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory, a young lab led with interdisciplinary skills at its core.

Co-led by Dr Jim Whittle (neurooncologist), Dr Saskia Freytag (bioinformatician) and Dr Sarah Best (fundamental biology), the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory drives research projects with a strong multidisciplinary focus.

Our research aims to develop improved diagnostics, treatments and pre-clinical models to ultimately improve the survival of patients with brain cancer Our research combines clinical and pre-clinical models with advanced genomics technologies and bioinformatic analyses to improve the cancer therapeutic landscape (Nature Communications 2019, Cell Metabolism 2022, Cancer Discovery 2019, Clinical Cancer Research 2020).
