About the Infection Prevention & Control Department


The Infection Prevention & Control team is a dynamic group of infection control practitioners who provide expert and evidence-based consultancy service across Austin Health, as well as undertaking the required surveillance testing programs.

The team is supported by the Infectious Diseases Unit. The team is led by a Medical Director and Nurse Manager.


About the role


The primary objective of the Infection Prevention & Control program is to provide a microbiologically safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors at Austin Health.

The clinical nurse consultant works as part of the Infection Prevention & Control team.

A regular day will see you:

  • perform Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Surveillance, CLABSI, SAB and CDI surveillance.
- assist with outbreak of communicable disease management.
- monitor and report Multiple Resistant Organisms (MRO) to clinical areas.
- assist with Standard 3: Prevention of Health care associated infection activities.
- perform compliance auditing and oversight of Hand Hygiene (HH) Aseptic Technique (AT), and environmental Infection Control audits.
- assist with capital works and engineering redesign Infection Control risk management.
- provide informal and formal Infection Control education sessions when required.

  • Assist in developing and reviewing clinical guidelines in accordance with current best practice, and Australian and international standards/guidelines.
