The Department


Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is a teaching and research unit of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and is centred at the Alfred Hospital Campus.

It plays a prominent role in public health medicine in Australia and has a strong record for training individuals with the capacity and skills to assume leadership roles in Australia in this field.

We work closely with the major Monash affiliated hospitals, research institutes and public health units within Victoria and nationally. Our skills provide a key resource underpinning translational research within our Faculty.

Monash Registries operate from the
Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. The department has broad expertise in applied clinical and public health research.

Its core skills of epidemiology, biostatistics and data management support extensive research programs aimed at reducing suffering, preventing illness and improving quality of life.

The department's research program takes place in settings ranging from remote communities and workplaces to intensive care units.


This position would work within the
Cancer Research Program, led by Professor John Zalcberg, which was established to enhance the cancer research focus within the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine's clinical and public health activities.

The Cancer Research Program undertake clinical trials and cohort studies, principally using the numerous cancer quality registries it manages as a research tool and translational research platform.


SCANpatient is a randomised controlled trial (RCT) funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), that aims to test whether a structured radiology report can improve the accuracy of reporting of computed tomography (CT) scans to classify patients with non-metastatic pancreatic cancer as having tumours that are either clearly resectable, borderline or locally advanced leading to improved delivery of care and patient outcomes.


The Role


This position description is for a Project Officer to work within the Cancer Research Program, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University based at the Alfred Hospital campus (553 St Kilda Road) on the SCANPatient clinical trial.


Education/Qualifications

The appointee will:

  • Have a relevant tertiary qualification
  • Have relevant work experience, including some administrative and research ethics and governance experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrate good understanding of medical terminology and health care systems
  • Have an excellent work ethic, great time management skills and a desire to do the job well
  • Possess initiative and strong attention to detail
  • Have welldeveloped verbal and written communication skills
  • Have high level computer literacy
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of confidentiality, privacy and information handling principles
  • Adhere to all relevant Monash and Alfred Health policies
