The opportunity:


We are seeking a talented Associate Genetic Counsellor to join our team at VCGS Reproductive Genetic Counselling, where innovation and expertise converge to provide comprehensive genetic counselling and clinical support.


As a member of our team, you will play a vital role in guiding individuals and couples through the intricacies of reproductive genetic carrier screening, non-invasive prenatal testing, maternal serum screening, and prenatal diagnosis.

You will have the opportunity to make a difference by providing compassionate genetic counselling, developing impactful programs, contributing to education and research initiatives, and collaborating closely with laboratory and clinical teams.


You will be responsible for delivering accurate information regarding genetic screening and testing results to both patients and healthcare professionals.

Crafting educational materials, such as brochures, factsheets, and website content, will be part of your creative endeavours.

Furthermore, you will play a key role in collecting follow-up data on screening program outcomes and delivering educational sessions to healthcare professionals, ensuring the continued success of our Reproductive Genetics services.


In this role you will identify client needs, assess requirements for genetic counselling and testing, plan and participate in counselling sessions, interpret and explain genetic analysis results, facilitate additional genetic testing (including prenatal diagnosis), and maintain records of counselling outcomes.

Your expertise will extend through telephone and telehealth consultations, providing convenient access to support for individuals and families.


We are offering a 9-month full-time position for a Grade 1-2 Associate Genetic Counsellor or a Grade 3 Genetic Counsellor.


Your responsibilities include:

Provide genetic counselling support regarding the VCGS

Reproductive Genetics Services:
non-invasive prenatal testing, reproductive genetic carrier screening, maternal serum screening and prenatal diagnosis
Promptly respond to enquiries from patients and health professionals.
Respond to requests from laboratory teams to source additional clinical information about referrals.
Ensure efficient notification of clinically actionable results to requesting practitioners and screened individuals.

Draft clinical content to contribute to the development of education and marketing materials in collaboration with laboratory staff and the VCGS communications team.

Work collaboratively with other relevant VCGS teams (Business Development, Strategy, Reproductive Genetics Laboratory teams) to ensure efficient running of VGCS Reproductive Genetics services.

Assist with recruitment and consenting of patients into research projects.


About you:

Master of Genetic Counselling that fulfils the academic requirements for Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) Board Eligible status, or previously attained Member of HGSA (Genetic Counselling)
Experience in reproductive/prenatal genetics
Knowledge and understanding of genetic counselling, including medical, genetic and psychosocial aspects.
Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team
Work with sensitivity to one's own values and those of others
