About the Role:


The Data Utility team is a specialized data engineering team that primarily operates within specific customer segments and strategically advances BHP's digital foundations by focusing on data ingestion, engineering and architecture activities which publish quality business data for efficient reusable consumption.


As the Manager of the Data Utility team, you will play a key role supporting our Customer Delivery teams that fundamentally change BHP's performance across safety, productivity and people performance.

You will also mentor and coach engineers and continuously improve the financial management of the team.

Some of you key responsibilities will be:

  • Set ambitious and clear product vision and communicate it effectively to stakeholders, the team, and the rest of the Customer Delivery teams.
  • Own the complete lifecycle of enabling access to quality governed data from data integration through data storage and processing to enabling access to, to transition to operations
  • Be accountable for ensuring specific KPI's are met that align to the goals of the Data Strategy
  • Be accountable for the value delivered by the product once in the hands of endusers
  • Be accountable for the wellbeing of the Data Utility team under your charge
  • Be accountable for ensuring alignment to goals of the strategic data architecture and over all goals of the Data Strategy
  • Collaborate with other Data Utility product owners as part of a global Data Utility Practice to ensure data architecture alignment and alignment to the data utility ways of working
  • Collaborate with Asset and Customer Delivery teams stakeholders to ensure data requirements align with data strategy approach and translate to sound data engineering scope and requirements
  • Translate user needs into user stories and acceptance criteria for their team. Maintain a backlog 3 to 4 sprints ahead of the team
  • Facilitate release planning with stakeholders as well as fortnightly demos
  • Work onsite with the team on a daily basis
  • Integrate usability studies and research into product requirements to enhance user satisfaction and ensure customer driven design
  • Build and operate within a Financial Budget

About You:


  • Bachelor's degree required; Computer Science, MIS, or Engineering preferred
  • Experience with Data Concepts such as Data Architecture, data life cyle and DataOps
  • Experienced in facilitating agile ceremonies, managing a backlog/release plan, tracking team level metrics, (e.g. burndown chart, release burn up, etc.), and removing blockers
  • Deep experience leading teams in an agile setting
  • Domain knowledge in one or more respective digital product and/or operational domains
  • Strong leader, collaborator, team player, and individual contributor
  • Strong communication skills with comfort in speaking with business stakeholders
  • Strong problem solver with ability to manage and lead the team to push the solution and progress
  • Believes in a nonhierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust
  • Not afraid to "roll up the sleeves" and seeks to go outside comfort zone to learn pushes teams to do the same
  • Experimental mindset to drive innovation
