The Group:
Morningstar's Research group provides independent analysis on individual securities, funds, markets, and portfolios.

The Research group also leverages data on hundreds of thousands of investment offerings, including stocks, mutual funds, and similar vehicles, along with real-time global market data on millions of equities, indexes, futures, options, commodities, and precious metals, in addition to foreign exchange and Treasury markets.


The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Manager Research Analyst with a unique perspective to play an important role in our team by researching fund managers that oversee managed funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and listed investment companies and trusts (LICs/LITs).

The research process involves critically analysing fund managers, providing analytical and data-related support for Morningstar's proprietary research algorithm, writing research reports, managing relationships with asset managers and asset owners, and working on various thought leadership assignments.

This role will be based in our Sydney, Barangaroo office.


What you'll do:


  • Develop a deep understanding of the Morningstar Medalist Methodology and provide related analytical and data support;
  • Research and critically assess fund managers and their products;
  • Write succinct and reader friendly research reports;
  • Provide analytical support to our Senior Analysts and manage adhoc analytical assignments on investments, managed funds and products;
  • Lead fund manager interviews;
  • Play a role in formulating and justifying our opinions on investment strategies;
  • Undertake other administrative, research and/or analytical work as required;

We're interested in hearing from people who have:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in a finance or business-related discipline, with an interest in pursuing CFA or other relevant postgraduate studies.
  • 3 + years' work experience ideally but not necessarily gained within a financial services environment.
  • Strong analytical and data skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ideally with the ability to think and write creatively.
  • Strong critical reasoning skills (past experience in high school or university debating is viewed favourably), and a preparedness to challenge the status quo with wellinformed opinions.
  • Ability to use own initiative and work unsupervised together with the ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.

  • A passion for investing, demonstrated through personal knowledge of and interest in investment markets.
  • Proactive aptitude to building effective internal and external relationships with key stakeholders and acting as a representative of Morningstar.
