The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) is Australia's national criminal intelligence agency. We advise senior decision makers on serious and organised crime impacting Australia.

About the branch

Workforce Capability and Assurance provides a key enabling function, supporting the development of agency capability and providing the agency with the assurance that it continues to meet its legislative obligations.

The branch is responsible for the delivery of all human resource and people strategies, as well as protecting the agency, its people and its capabilities through an integrated protective security and integrity function.

Workforce Capability and Assurance supports employee wellbeing, as well as provides critical support to intelligence operations by oversighting the agency's use of certain powers, ensuring legislative compliance and contributing to operational outcomes.


About the role

The Security Officer is responsible for supporting protective security operations and providing advice to ACIC Executive and staff in accordance with Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and agency-specific risks.

Security Officer may be responsible for PERSEC, PHYSEC and/or GOVSEC within the Security & Integrity Team including the identification, development and implementation of innovative risk-based approaches to protective security management processes as an important focus.

The Security Officer provides a broad range of administrative support to the Security & Integrity team in support of the department's obligations and requirements under the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).


It includes liaison and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders on protective security policies, guidelines and procedures as well as contributing to the management of protective security at the ACIC.

The role is an exciting opportunity to assist in driving a contemporary security culture in a diverse organisation. The duties of this position may require interstate travel and on-call arrangements outside normal business hours.

The position requires its occupant to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, professionalism and impartiality in carrying out their duties.


  • Demonstrates an ability to research and interpret information, including strategic analytical and conceptual thinking skills and the ability to assess risk and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Is able to undertake a wide variety of Protective Security (PERSEC/PHYSEC/GOVSEC) tasks including analysis and assessment of detailed and sensitive information.
  • Has experience in implementing and an understanding of Australian Government protective security policies and principles.
  • Displays communication skills including persuasive verbal negotiation and liaison skills, and strong written skills in the preparation of policies, procedures, reports, security risk assessments and briefing material.
  • Is able to contribute constructively to team activities and cultivate productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Eligibility

  • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS, unless the agency head has agreed otherwise, in writing. For further information, contact the Recruitment Team.
  • The Australian community expects ACIC employees to maintain the highest levels of security and integrity. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain, or continue to hold, the required security clearance for this role. All ACIC employees are required to hold a minimum Negative Vetting 1 security clearance, unless otherwise specified.
  • To be eligible to work at the ACIC, you must be fully vaccinated against COVID19. Being fully vaccinated ensures the health and safety of all employees, and the Australian community. Satisfactory proof of vaccination status will be required before you are able to commence employment with the ACIC.
