What you will be doing?


The Food Incident Response & Complaints team plays a critical role in responding to and addressing food safety risk and compliance in NSW.

As a Food Incident Response & Complaints Officer, you will be part of the Compliance & Integrity Systems team within the Biosecurity & Food Safety Branch of NSW DPI.

DPI Biosecurity & Food Safety is responsible for regulating and monitoring food safety and biosecurity across NSW.


In this role, you will be assisting and undertaking compliance inspections and investigations of NSW based food businesses to address food safety risks and maximise compliance in respect to food safety and legislation.

The role is varied, with a focus on responding to and investigating potential food safety risks.


Working as a Regulatory Compliance Officer you will:

  • inspect a variety of food businesses across the Sydney Metropolitan area
- prepare inspection reports and make recommendations on investigations and inspections
- initiate enforcement action where appropriate
- provide information and recommendations to business owners
- engage with industry stakeholders to facilitate compliance
- work within delegation and in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols to create consistency and transparency across compliance activities
- interpret and keep up to date with current and new legislation, policies and procedures
- conduct food incident investigations, including outbreak investigations as required across NSW
- assist in NSW emergency management of food and biosecurity incidents as required across NSW


What you need to be successful in this role:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Science or Food Technology, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated practical experience in food regulation
  • Previous experience in foodborne illness investigations highly desirable
  • Excellent knowledge of Food legislation, including the Food Standards Code and Food Act 2003 (NSW)
  • Practical knowledge of food safety, food technology and food microbiology.
  • Experience undertaking a range of compliance related activities in a sensitive and complex environment
  • Current NSW Driver Licence & ability and willingness to travel throughout NSW at short notice when required
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic and highvolume environment with strict deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with an eye for detail
