About the role


We have an opportunity for an individual to join us as Manager, Legislation & Policy Legal Team on an ongoing basis.


The Legislation & Policy Team provides advice and support in relation to DGS Ministers' legislative projects and supports the Secretary in overseeing the Government's legislative program.


Key Accountabilities include:

  • Providing strategic and high quality legal and policy advice DGS Ministers, senior departmental staff and other areas of the Department in relation to the Government's agenda, with limited supervision.
  • Leading the development, management and implementation of complex policy and legislative proposals (including preparing Cabinet submissions, briefs and drafting instructions).
  • Leading the preparation of submissions and briefs to Ministers and senior DGS officials on issues led by the team, including on significant policy and legislative proposals.
  • Briefing Ministers on legislation delivered by the team, and supporting Ministers with advice through the Parliamentary process.
  • Leading and managing a team of lawyers providing legal advice and inhouse counsel to senior Departmental staff and DGS Ministers.

About you
To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience or demonstrated ability in managing and leading a team to provide technically excellent advice on complex legal issues and fostering professional development.
  • Strong planning and organisation skills, and the ability to effectively utilise available resources and effectively procure and manage the provision of external legal services.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills.

Mandatory requirements

  • You must hold a law degree. Being eligible to hold a Victorian practising certificate would be looked on favourably
